ABOUT THIS PROJECT

Murray State University sought to create a dynamic new hub that reimagines student life by integrating residential, dining, academic, and support spaces under one roof. The Learning Commons, located at the former site of Springer Hall, was designed to enhance student engagement, support academic success, and strengthen campus connectivity.

Luckett & Farley’s design solutions address these goals through a four-story, 83,370-square-foot building that accommodates over 250 student beds in a variety of configurations including ADA-accessible private rooms, semi-suites, and four-bed suites. Each floor includes student-centered amenities such as study lounges, game rooms, laundry facilities, providing both comfort and academic support.

The ground floor combines the common spaces and housing. Envisioned as both a campus destination and the living room for residential students, the Learning Commons features student success meeting rooms, smaller study spaces, a counter-service dining venue, and a flexible 120-seat meeting and event space. These areas are designed to foster community and provide essential daily resources for students. A front desk system supports secure access, reinforcing a safe and inclusive environment for all residents.

In addition to delivering a cohesive student experience, the building’s strategic location supports broader campus planning efforts. The Learning Commons strengthens pedestrian pathways and visual connections across campus, anchoring the residential quadrant with a vibrant new landmark.

Understanding the complexity of combining a learning commons, housing, and dining into one facility, Luckett & Farley partnered closely with Murray State University to ensure the project aligned with institutional goals. A collaborative, cost-conscious approach guided design decisions at every phase, resulting in a resilient, student-focused facility that reflects the future of campus life at Murray State University.
