About this project
Luckett & Farley’s Media + Entertainment Group designed iHeart’s new 12,000sf office/performance studio space at 32 6th Avenue in New York (the historic former home of AT&T).
The space is office-heavy, with a lower proportion of workstations. The offices are arranged laterally with wall-to-wall glass. Office fronts are approximately 11’ high; most office fronts are seven to eight feet in height.
The “heart and soul” of the floor plan is the Commons area. It is, essentially, a lounge/family room where impromptu, informal meetings can take place. This is also where live music performances/music artist interviews will take place. These events will be captured live and with the purpose of editing and broadcasting (over radio and/or internet) simultaneously.
The flooring consists of reclaimed and distressed hardwood to complement the existing interior brick walls. The interior offices have finished ceilings to offset the scale and proportion of the office.
The lighting is state-of-the-art. The majority of light fixtures are LED and controlled by a system that monitors exterior lighting and occupancy. Every light fixture has the ability to be customized per the occupant’s general preferences. The perimeter is monitored by an array of controls, shades, and continually adjusting LED lights to keep the space as well-balanced as possible.
A challenge to the construction was the tight column spacing found within the space. The original plans called for an open and flowing space. However, the design team embraced the challenge and created a solution that regularized the geometry. The result gave the space more personality that it did not have in its original form.
