One of the largest American-owned wine and spirits companies is planning a massive expansion at its distillery off Dixie Highway.

Brown-Forman filed an application Monday to Louisville Metro Planning & Design Services to add 48,864 square feet of new buildings to its distillery at 2921 Dixie Highway.

The Louisville-based company already owns the property, which consists of a little more than 53 acres.

The expansion will "incorporate the partial or full removal of several existing structures, with new buildings being added or existing structures being expanded," according to a letter by Curtis Petty, a landscape architect with the firm Luckett & Farley.
