Blueprints of legacy: The 1894 plans for Churchill Downs

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — As we get closer to the most exciting two minutes in sports, we are highlighting a piece of Churchill Downs history. Louisville-based design and architecture firm Luckett & Farley showcased original blueprints that were hand drawn 131 years ago.

“1894 they were originally designed and were constructed in 1895,” said Robert Lindgren, vice president of Luckett & Farley.

The designs lay out the exact measurements of the original grandstands and now-iconic Twin Spires, which would come roughly 20 years after the first Kentucky Derby.

“We cherish designing buildings and to see something that’s been around so long is really incredible,” Lindgren said.
