About this project

Luckett & Farley designed the iconic Twin Spires at Churchill Downs more than 100 years ago. In that time we have continued to serve as the A/E firm for projects large and small at the racetrack.

In recent years, Luckett & Farley has provided design services for numerous projects at the track, including a new dormitory on the backside, the development of a 10-year master plan for renovations and expansions and design services for a renovated Gate One, a grand new entrance to the facility.

In addition to these projects, Luckett & Farley also designed a $3 million renovation and expansion to the Kentucky Derby Museum which adjoins Gate One.

Luckett & Farley provided full architectural and engineering design services for the $127 million replacement and renovation of the clubhouse, grandstand and various spaces throughout the legendary racing facility. The project required considerable planning and phasing throughout design and construction to accommodate spectators, Derby activities and media.

Phase One was the Renovation of the Jockey’s Club (the original Twin Spires area) and the addition of Jockey’s Club Suites, adding 66 new suites overlooking the track, each with the capacity to hold 25 people. The first and second floors of the Grandstand were also renovated. Phase One was completed in April 2003.

Phase Two was the replacement of the Clubhouse, including upgrades to the box seats in the grandstand. The Clubhouse was completely modernized, including a new off-track betting facility, commercial kitchens, dining and conference space.

DINING & FOOD SERVICE AREAS

Included in the Phase Two replacement were dining and food service throughout the facility, featuring the following:

  • Turf Club dining area: 600 seats
  • Food Court: 72 seats
  • Silks Lounge: 461 seats
  • Matt Wynn Room: 234 seats
  • Group Sales (2 floors): 1,008 seats

Central Kitchen on the 1st floor (5,600sf), full service kitchens on the 3rd, 4th and 6th floors (4,000sf, 2,240sf and 1,477sf), and satellite kitchens on the 2nd and 5th floors (1,086sf and 1,966sf).
